Editorials in The Bee are the collective opinion of the editorial board, which meets regularly to discuss community concerns and issues of the day.
Gil Durán is California Opinion Editor, leading strategy for McClatchy Newspapers’ opinion pages in Sacramento, Fresno, Modesto, Merced and San Luis Obispo. A native of Tulare, Durán started his career as a reporter for the San Jose Mercury News after graduating from DePauw University in 1998. In 2003, Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown appointed Durán as his press secretary. He went on to serve as a spokesman for Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa and Senator Dianne Feinstein before returning to serve as Brown’s press secretary in the governor’s office from 2011-2013. Before returning to journalism full-time, Durán launched FrameLab, a podcast about language and politics he co-hosts with UC Berkeley cognitive scientist Dr. George Lakoff. He also wrote op-eds for The Sacramento Bee and the Guardian. He can be reached at email@example.com, 916-321-1097 or on Twitter at @gilduran76.
Jack Ohman, The Bee’s editorial cartoonist, was supposed to be governor of Minnesota, but neglected to go into professional wrestling – so he started cartooning at The Minnesota Daily in 1978 instead. A native Minnesotan (that’s three MN references thus far), Ohman has won virtually every major American journalism award. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 2016 and was a Pulitzer finalist in 2012. His previous employers include The Columbus Dispatch (53 weeks), the Detroit Free Press (17 months) and The Oregonian (29 years). He has a B.A. in history from the Portland State University Honors College, where he learned a lot about the New Deal and how to raise three children while attending college. He is an avid fly fisherman (fly fishermen are always described as avid) and the author of 10 books, many of which are about avid fly fishermen. He has a nice bike but doesn’t discuss it competently. He eats right, sits up straight and still has quite a bit of hair for his age. Jack Ohman can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org, 916-321-1911 or on Twitter at @JACKOHMAN.
