The 49ers were one of 26 teams on hand in Blacksburg, Va., Wednesday morning to watch the workout of Adonis Alexander, a 6-foot-2 cornerback who will be available in next month's supplemental draft.

Alexander was ruled academically ineligible for the upcoming season at Virginia Tech, prompting him to join the supplemental draft on July 11. Alexander had seven interceptions in three seasons with the Hokies and is seen as the sort of big, press-coverage cornerback teams like the 49ers and Seahawks desire.

However, he's had some missteps along the way, including a 2016 arrest for marijuana possession and a two-game suspension last season for violating team rules.

No player has been selected in the NFL's supplemental draft since 2015, when the Rams took tackle Isaiah Battle in the fifth round. Teams interested in prospects bid on a player by telling the league in which round they would take that player. The team with the lowest-round bid gets the player but loses the commensurate draft pick in the upcoming draft.

The 49ers head into the 2018 season with Richard Sherman and Ahkello Witherspoon atop their depth chart at cornerback. The team also has veteran Jimmie Ward at the position, although he could end up playing any spot in the secondary this season and is signed only through March.

San Francisco drafted safety Tarvarius Moore in April with the thought that he will play cornerback for them in the future. They also signed Tarvarus McFadden from Florida State after the draft and have several other tall, lanky prospects like Tyvis Powell and Greg Mabin on the roster.
