Large apartment complex could help Sac State shed its commuter school rep

One of the largest new apartment buildings near the Sacramento State campus is in the works.

TriCap Development submitted plans to the city of Sacramento last week to construct a six-story apartment building on 65th Street, near Folsom Boulevard. The building would have 90 apartments for students and the general public.

The developers want to include 45 bicycle parking spots in the building, which would stand close to the Hornet Tunnel bike and pedestrian access to the Sacramento State campus. The project also is close to the 65th Street light rail station.

The new building would replace vacant structures on the lot.

Sacramento State has tried for years to shed its reputation as a commuter school, investing in new dorms overlooking the American River and some off-campus projects.

Heavily used streets and intersections near Sacramento State will be getting significant upgrades meant to provide safer riding for bicyclists.
