Just-closed West Sacramento dim sum restaurant snatched up in a hurry

The co-owners of the Sacramento-area Zócalo restaurants have purchased the just-closed King’s Restaurant building in West Sacramento and plan to convert it to another restaurant and a commercial kitchen that will prep items for the Zócalo Mexican cuisine chain.

Financial terms of the property purchased at 1500 W. Capitol Ave., were not disclosed.

King’s Restaurant, the West Sacramento dim sum eatery with roots dating to 1960, had its final day of business on Sunday. Longtime owner/operator Chew Lam, 93, opted to retire after decades overseeing the local eatery.

Zócalo co-owners Ernesto Jimenez and Jimmy Johnson currently oversee two operating Zócalo eateries: 1801 Capitol Ave. in midtown Sacramento and at 1182 Roseville Parkway in the Fountains shopping complex in Roseville.

A third Zócalo site is scheduled to open in early December at The UV, long known as University Village, at the intersection of Howe Avenue and Fair Oaks Boulevard.

Johnson said the West Sacramento restaurant will have a different name and a different vibe compared with other Zócalo sites.

“We haven’t decided on the name yet, but it will be different … something a little more affordable,” Johnson said Tuesday in a phone interview.

Johnson said extensive interior work needs to be done at the West Sacramento site, which may not be fully up and running until midyear 2018. He said he expects the commercial kitchen to be functional before the new restaurant.

“We want to take our time and do it right,” he said.
